T.O.R.C.H. Sessions Overview
Stomp Rockets - Saturday, January 21, 2017
The Stomp Rockets sessions will teach the students basic theory about rockets. The students will use common items that can be found at home and home improvement stores to build rockets. The will learn the basics of engineering design, rocketry and celestial navigation. The students will learn how load and cargo affects the speed of a rocket and will be challenged to find the altitude of the rocket. The students will be taught about the early stages of the space program which will include a brief history of the women featured in the hidden figures movie.
Pretty Kool - Saturday, January 28, 2017
The Pretty Kool session will focus on chemistry, marketing, and branding. The girls will make different types of Kool-Aid lip gloss. The students will be able to use their creativity to make unique flavors, and sparkles will be available for use if deemed necessary. The learners will gain knowledge of the early history of makeup for African American Women. After the young ladies have completed making their gloss they will create vision boards to show how they would market their product for African American women. The students will learn of the African origins of make-up and see the progression of the black beauty movement. At the end of this STEAM activity, the students will be empowered and reminded by professional engineers that it is “Pretty Kool” to be black.
